Clinton-Edith J. (Delvecchio) Costello, 97, passed away peacefully at Leominster Hospital on Monday, January 17, 2022, following a period of declining health. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Francis J. Costello, who died in 1966. She is survived by her loving son, John F. Costello & wife Julie, and adoring granddaughter, Jessica Costello, all of Leominster; extended family, and dear friends. She is pre-deceased by her infant granddaughter Laura Marie Costello, and her brother Evo Delvecchio.
Edith was born in Clinton, daughter of Italian immigrants Ercole & Giuseppina (Mariotti) Delvecchio. The first in her family to complete the 12th grade, Edie graduated from the Clinton High School as a member of the Class of 1941. In addition to devoting her life to raising her family, Mrs. Costello spent her professional career working for the Ray-O-Vac Company and later as a cafeteria worker at the former St. John’s School in Clinton. Among her many talents, Edie enjoyed preparing authentic Italian cuisine, baking desserts, knitting, crocheting, and hosting family and friends in her home. She was an avid sports fan and could often be found in the stands cheering for her son at his baseball games. Edie completed daily crossword puzzles, always had a book in her hand, and kept up with current events. Above all, Edie was most proud in her role as a devoted family matriarch, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Calling hours will be held from 5 until 7PM on Friday, January 21, 2022 in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton, with burial to follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster.
